Nitta textiles result from the persistent efforts and research of generations of family
members. And only through the unique technique of repeated-dyeing can we
achieve the hundreds of different shades and hues that are unlike anything else.
History of the Nitta Family
The silk fabric industry was founded by Yozan Uesugi, the lord of the Yonezawa Domain in the late 18th century.
Nitta Textile Arts Inc. was founded in 1884 by the Nitta samurai family. Starting out as a weaving shop, it has been operating for five generations.
Benibana (safflower) Dyeing
The safflower, or ‘Benibana,’ is designated as the prefectural flower of Yamagata. During the Edo period, benibana picked in Yamagata was processed into “hanamochi (‘flower cakes’, or round rice-cakes) before being transported. We continue to use this same traditional method today.
